Acupuncture
What is it?
Acupuncture is a core part of Traditional Chinese Medicine which has been practiced for thousands of years. Fine needles are inserted into various points on the body. There are many forms of Acupuncture and each can be used to treat different conditions. Below are some of they types of Acupuncture offered at Laura Ryan Therapies.
Does it hurt? I’m scared of needles!
The needles used are incredibly fine and are measured in hundredths of a millimetre (approximately 0.15mm-0.30mm in width). When inserted into particularly stiff tissue then it’s normal to feel some slight discomfort but many customers do not even feel the needles going in. Several customers who are terrified by standard needles are happy to receive acupuncture once they see the width of the needles our therapists use!
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture
This is the mot widely known form of Acupuncture in use today. It uses the Chinese model of the human body to treat a wide range of issues. Some of the conditions our therapists have helped include physical pain and discomfort, sleep problems, symptoms of menopause, fertility and related gynaecological problems, stress and anxiety, and sciatica. There’s too many to list here but the British Acupuncture Council offers factsheets on how Acupuncture can help a variety of concerns here.
Medical Acupuncture (Dry Needling)
This is the form of Acupuncture that is accepted within the Western medical model. It is used specifically to release muscle tension, nerve pain, headaches and migraines.
Electro-Acupuncture
An advanced form of Medical Acupuncture, a mild (and completely safe) electrical current is applied to needles at various frequencies to stimulate the muscle tissue and nervous system. It is particularly useful for treating acute injury and chronic joint pain.
Cosmetic Acupuncture
Sometimes called a ‘natural facelift’ Cosmetic Acupuncture is a great way to relax facial muscles, smoothen the skin and reduce creases, wrinkles and scarring. Treatments last around 90 minutes and we have seen some excellent results so far. If you are looking for a natural, chemical free alternative to treatments such as Botox then Cosmetic Acupuncture is definitely something you should try.
Microsystems Acupuncture
Microsystems Acupuncture focusses on either the ear, hand or foot and stimulates the nerve endings that connect with the rest of the body, primarily the organs. It is most frequently used to treat stress, anxiety and addiction.
